About us

Our brand, Sheenlac, was envisioned and established by our founder Mr. John Peter, with the ultimate goal to exceed customer expectations through innovative and high quality products. The word “SHEENLAC” was coined by Mr Krishna moorthy of Janatha Paints, meaning SHEEN – meaning lustre & LAC – meaning lacquer. Mr Patrick, an artist, helped in creating the font style.

1962

Established the first factory at Ambattur to manufacture Thinners and Wood Polish. Mr Paul Peter joined the company and he was instrumental in launching non-alcoholic wood polish, an innovative product in the industry.

1971

Together as a team, they brought one-of-its-kind innovation in India like packaging the products in HDPE bottles, which underlined the company’s strong presence in the industry. This was the first of its kind in converting an unbranded thinner and polish segment into an organised and branded segment.

1977

Was the first to launch NC Sanding sealer to the Indian market.

1982

The company began the expansion of the retail network in south India – Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh.

1980-85

A new factory at Ambattur was launched for the production of complete range of Automotive paints. Here, the company gained good traction since they were able to launch new colours within a week’s time.

1986

Started a fully automatic factory at Thirumazhisai, near Chennai. This was the largest manufacturing facility for Thinners and Polishes in India.

1991

Mr Sudhir Peter joined the organisation. He has been a significant driving force in the organization spearheading collaborations with major global brands, his strategic expertise has invigorated and strengthened the brand. Under his eminent leadership, Sheenlac Paints has augmented its distinguished presence in the paint industry and made phenomenal strides in becoming one of the leading paint brands in India.

1994

In order to strengthen the technical capability, the company entered into a technical tie-up with AkzoNobel coating, Italy.

2000

In order to leverage the distribution strength Sheenlac entered into distribution of M/s Saint-Gobain Abrasives.

2005

A New facility was inaugurated at Vadakanallur near Chennai to manufacture Wood & Decorative coating with an installed capacity of 36,000 KL/PA.

2010

Sheenlac entered into a joint venture with Noroo Coating of Korea to manufacture and sell a complete range of Automotive coating. Thereby providing around 20,000 colours to the customers.

2013

Sheenlac enters the Sri Lankan market with Sheenlac Paints Lanka Ltd. focusing on the wood coating segment and sets up a complete distribution network.

2015

Sheenlac enters into a Joint Venture (JV) with Jenson and Nicholson to reposition the decorative segment.

2016

Enters the industrial and protective coating segment, sets up a separate division for the same.

2017

Launches the “InstaColor” series into the market, thereby providing 3000 colours to the customer .

2018

Signs up with “Oscar award” winner “Mr. A. R. Rahman” for endorsing the Sheenlac range of products.

2020

In April 2024, Jenson and Nicholson Paints was solely acquired by Sheenlac Paints in India.
